A Musician’s Advent, Week 3: The Joy of Simplicity

By the time we reach the third week of Advent, many of us are deep into the holiday season, surrounded by the complexities of our musical obligations. From intricate arrangements to challenging solos, it’s easy to get lost in the details. But this week, we are called to focus on the joy of simplicity.

Advent is about preparing our hearts for the arrival of Christ, and often, that preparation happens in simple ways. Instead of getting lost in the busyness of holiday performances, let’s take a step back and embrace the simplicity of the season.

Simplicity in Music and Life

Matthew 11:28 reminds us: “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” This invitation to rest is a call to let go of the burdens we carry and find peace in simplicity.

This week, we’re encouraged to embrace simplicity, both in our practice and in our lives. We don’t need to perform complex pieces to experience joy—sometimes, the most profound moments happen when we focus on something simple and beautiful.

Practical Ways to Embrace Simplicity

  1. Simplify Your Repertoire: Choose one simple piece to practice—perhaps a familiar carol or hymn that brings you joy. Play it without striving for perfection, simply enjoying the melody and the peace it brings.

  2. Let Go of Perfection: Music is beautiful in its simplicity, and so is life. Allow yourself to step away from the drive for perfection and embrace the beauty of imperfection. Let your music be a reflection of grace, not perfection.

  3. Slow Down: In the hustle of the season, it’s easy to rush through rehearsals and performances. This week, focus on slowing down and savoring the beauty of the music. It’s not about how fast you can play or sing—it’s about the joy in the moment.

Hymn: “O Come, O Come, Emmanuel”

The Advent hymn “O Come, O Come, Emmanuel” beautifully captures the longing for Christ's arrival in a simple, repetitive melody. Its simplicity reflects the spirit of waiting and anticipation that marks this season.

Lyrics:
O come, O come, Emmanuel,
And ransom captive Israel,
That mourns in lonely exile here,
Until the Son of God appear.

This week, as you reflect on these words, let them remind you that joy doesn’t come from complexity, but from anticipation and the simple presence of God.

Conclusion

Simplicity is not just for the music we play, but for our hearts as well. This week, let’s make space for joy by embracing the simple gifts of the season.

Until next time... Take care, my friends.
