A Musician’s Advent, Week 2: Finding Harmony in Chaos

The holiday season is often synonymous with chaos—endless rehearsals, performances, and a calendar packed with events. As musicians, we can easily get caught in the whirlwind of preparing for Christmas concerts, church services, and other performances. But amidst the chaos, Advent invites us to reflect on peace and harmony—not just in our music, but also in our relationships.

This week, we focus on finding harmony in the chaos. It’s about creating peace in the midst of busyness, both in the way we interact with others and in how we approach our musical endeavors.

Harmony Beyond Music

Romans 12:18 reminds us: “If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone.” As musicians, we are often working with others—whether in an ensemble, choir, or orchestra. Harmony is not just about the sounds we make together, but about the relationships we nurture. It’s about working together, listening to one another, and striving for cooperation over competition.

Finding harmony in chaos means extending grace to your fellow musicians, practicing patience, and remembering that music is about more than just hitting the right notes. It’s about building community through sound.

Practical Tips for Finding Harmony in Chaos

  1. Listen Actively: In a rehearsal, it’s easy to focus on your own part and try to perfect it. But harmony comes when we listen to those around us—whether it’s a soloist, a fellow instrumentalist, or a conductor. Make an effort to listen carefully to others and adjust your playing accordingly.

  2. Extend Grace in Relationships: Whether you’re working with a challenging colleague or feeling stressed about a performance, choose to extend grace. Everyone is under pressure, and a spirit of collaboration is essential for creating a peaceful and harmonious atmosphere.

  3. Take a Break When Needed: In the middle of the chaos, it’s okay to step back and take a deep breath. A short break can help reset your mind and bring a sense of peace before diving back into rehearsals or practice.

Hymn: “Let There Be Peace on Earth”

The hymn “Let There Be Peace on Earth” beautifully expresses the desire for peace and harmony in the world. Its simple prayer calls for us to be instruments of peace wherever we go.

Lyrics:
Let there be peace on earth, and let it begin with me.
Let there be peace on earth, the peace that was meant to be.
With God as our Father, brothers all are we.

In the midst of chaotic schedules and demanding performances, let this hymn remind us to be peacemakers, both in our music and in our relationships.

Conclusion

Harmony isn’t just something we create through music—it’s something we can cultivate in every aspect of our lives. This week, let’s strive to find peace in the chaos, not only through our music but also in how we treat others.

Until next time... Take care, my friends.
